Art and Sole on The Avenue
The Weitzmans kick up their heels on opening night of Art to the Avenue
The 17th annual Art to the Avenue Opening Night is this Thursday, May 1 starting at 5:30pm. The Ave will be abuzz with music, entertainment, and an astounding number of art exhibits. As you're strolling around enjoying the festivities be sure to stop by Stuart Weitzman. The boutique is kicking off opening night by hosting a book signing with the one and only, Jane Gershon Weitzman. Her book, Art & Sole, features more than 150 objets d'art from various artists that were displayed in the windows of their Madison Avenue store.
In celebration of Art to the Avenue, one-of-a-kind shoes by Ida Rak will be on display throughout the month of May and if you're shoe-obsessed (who isn't?) you will also have the opportunity to purchase one, or all of them. This is the first time in a decade that Stuart and Jane Weitzman have made shoes from the collection available for purchase.
With the event less than one week away, I asked Jane a few questions about her book, her style and what's on her radar these days.
1. How did you choose which shoes to feature in the book?
I looked at all of the shoes from each artist at the same time, and the best ones were usually evident. Sometimes, the editor eliminated a shoe or told me I had to make a choice between two shoes and it was difficult, but it all worked out.
2. Do you still own many of the original shoes from the window displays?
Unfortunately, I sold some of the best shoes, because I never thought there would be any more stores, much less a book, but I still ended up with a collection of over a thousand shoes.
3. How many pairs of shoes do you personally own?
I have no idea how many shoes I own, and I'm not sure that I want to know, but I have saved some of the best ones from the forty-seven years that we have been married, so it's a huge number.
4. Are they all Stuart Weitzman? If not, what other brands do you wear?
The only shoes that I own that are not Stuart's are the shoes that I work out in, because he only makes fashion sneakers, not athletic ones. I have never even had a desire to wear anyone else's shoes, because Stuart makes so many beautiful shoes for every occasion.
5. What is your most favorite pair of summer shoes you own?
My most favorite summer shoe is usually a very simple sandal. I bought one called "The Oval" in every color years ago and I still wear them. This year I bought one called "Synopsis".
6. Who is your go to clothing designer?
I own lots of clothes by Babette, because they are so easy to travel with. I also like Dolce & Gabbana, Max Mara, and Chanel. I love shopping in Saks in New York and I think that their Greenwich store is wonderful. Whenever I am in London, I buy several things in Jigsaw. I also like finding great clothes by designers that I have never heard of.
7. What’s on your reading list?
When I finished The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, I decided that I would read two other long books right away. I am about a third of the way through Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall and I will read her Bringing Up the Bodies next. Then, I plan to read The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman. I am also looking forward to Haruki Murakami's new book, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, which is being published in August.
8. What do you do for fun on the weekends?
I wish I could say that I do fun things on weekends, but there is always so much paperwork and so many e-mails to catch up with. I love being home in Greenwich after spending so much time traveling.
10. What is your guilty pleasure?
My guilty pleasure is the flourless, oil-less chocolate cookie at Dishes in the food court downstairs at Grand Central. They won't say how many calories it has, so I am sure that it is worse than it sounds.
11. Do you have any new projects are you working on now?
I can't take on any new projects in the near future, because Art & Sole is still keeping me very busy. I have already been booked for many speaking engagements next fall and some requests have even come in for 2015.
To see more of these beautiful works of art pick up a signed copy of Art & Sole, Thursday, May 1.
