Moffly Media Review: Burgers, Shakes & Fries
Christy Colasurdo

The popularity of Burgers, Shakes & Fries lies in its simplicity. When its original outpost opened in Byram, right off I-95 in 2007, lines stretched out the door. Discriminating burger snobs jostled with toddlers and teens for space in the bustling, twenty-seat burger joint that flips more than 1,000 burgers a week.

In November owner and longtime restaurateur Kory Wollins, who lives in Greenwich, opened his second BSF, across from Starbucks in Darien. This one is larger and more ambitious, with sixty-five seats, ten full-time employees, beer and wine, and even—egads—one salad on the menu. If all goes according to plan, more restaurants will follow.

Threre’s a reason BSF’s burgers are so tasty: They’re made from ground chuck, hand-pressed in-house, from Master Purveyors in the Bronx, the old-school outfit that has supplied the venerable JG Melon, one of New York’s oldest burger bars, for years.

BSF’s juicy one-third-pound burgers are served patty-melt style on butter-griddled bread instead of the standard cold bun. If you’re brave enough to attempt the double, be sure to stock up on napkins; they make a pretty mean mess.

With tasty hot burgers, crispy fries, and super-thick shakes—at prices that won’t dent your wallet—BSF gained instant cult status in Byram with everyone from high schoolers to stock traders. During the week some of Stamford’s most powerful brokerage houses are known to phone in orders for their entire trading desks.

The menu also features hot dogs, chicken, and a variety of fixings, but the burgers are the main draw. Paired with fries and a shake or a black cherry soda, there’s no better bang for your buck.
