Tim Reynolds at the Ridgefield Playhouse

A Q&A with the renowned guitarist

TR3, from left: Dan Martier, Tim Reynolds, and Mick Vaughn

Guitarist Tim Reynolds has been in the music industry for over thirty-five years. Born in Germany, Reynolds began playing guitar at an early age and has since mastered a multitude of instruments. He founded Tim Reynolds Trio (TR3) in the 1990s, and is currently touring with the band's other members Mick Vaughn and Dan Martier. TR3 released their first studio album, "Radiance," in 2009.

Reynolds has toured with the famed Dave Matthews Band, though he did not accept the offer to officially become a member.

On October 26, Reynolds and TR3 will perform at the Ridgefield Playhouse, the final stop on the band's Fall 2013 tour. We got the chance to ask the talented guitarist a few questions about the music industry and touring in Connecticut!

With a musical career spanning more than thirty-five years, guitarist and sonic innovator Tim Reynolds is known for his masterful command of melody and timing and for his uncanny ability to improvise on any instrument he touches. Having explored most musical styles, from rock, jazz and blues to classical and reggae, Reynolds’ wide-ranging musical versatility is evident each time he picks up his acoustic or electric guitar. Technically brilliant, yet emotionally honest, Reynolds’ music is inspired and authentic.

After a chance meeting with two talented musicians, bass player Mick Vaughn and drummer Dan Martier, a few rehearsals later, and several stealth appearances throughout North Carolina, Reynolds decided to resurrect the electric TR3. TR3 has been touring ever since, and in 2009 they released their first studio CD “Radiance.  He continues to surprise and delight his fans with rare acoustic performances throughout the country.

Have you been to this area of Connecticut yet?

Yes I have been there many times and always enjoy it.

What sets New England fans apart from fans in the rest of the country?

People are always very enthusiastic and respectful of the music. I get a sense people like to party up there, and we always get a very warm reception. Nothing but fond memories of being in Connecticut. Some of my favorite people live there, actor Christopher Walken, musicians Keith Richards and Rob Zombie.

How does it feel to be part of such a talented band?

Thank you for blowing up TR3! It feels really good to be in this band. I love Mick and Dan, they are both so talented and we always have a blast playing together. Our next album is going to be the breakout record for us and I'm psyched for people to hear it when it comes out.

What is the most memorable thing that has ever happened to you while touring?

One of the most memorable things was getting to play with legendary blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin a few years back. He was such a sweet man and great blues guitarist. I felt honored to be participating at that show.

What is the greatest music moment of 2013, in your opinion.

For me personally one of the greatest musical moments of 2013 was hearing the CD of the new band Atoms For Peace, with Tom Yorke (of Radiohead) and Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers). I really love that record — very fresh.

How has the music industry changed since you were first starting out?

The music industry has changed pretty drastically since I started out. In some ways it's also very much the same for me in that I still play clubs and smaller venues which really feels very down to earth. Kind of maintaining a certain humane consistency apart from the larger mainstream part of the industry — very grounding. There are still big record companies but there are also many other ways to get music out there through the Internet. It seems like back in the day (70's 80's) people went out to see music in clubs more, and now you have giant megashows with over the top production in large venues. There have always been large venues but now the science of big show entertainment is perfected. Although I can tell you back in the day concerts were magic as they still are. That's why we keep wanting to see and hear music: magic!

Where do you see the industry headed?

I certainly can't predict the future but it seems that with new technologies everyone has to change, record companies, musicians, etc. There will probably always be some form, albeit transformed, of record companies. And there will hopefully always be artists with new and fresh ideas. Some will go into the mainstream and some won't. Either intentionally or because they can't. As long as there are people trying to shake things up and break new ground music and art will stay alive.

What is your favorite thing about your job as a successful musician?

My favorite thing is music itself, and to be able to dream in it and be inside it while it's alive is the true meaning of life for me.
