If atmosphere sets the tone for a party, then a great party favor is the exclamation point for tying an entire theme together. Everyone from kids to brides pour over the best favors to gift for guests in the hopes that their soiree will be remembered.  Think of a favor as your post-party personality! As parties continue to foster more customization, those kitchy favors of years past (salt and pepper shakers anyone?) have morphed into favor buffets where guests can customize their own take home treats. We are huge fans of a great favor buffet as they offer an activity & double as party décor. Here are a few seasonal favors to consider this fall!

Treats & Tricks:

Candy, candy, candy..its everywhere between Halloween & the holiday’s. And since we can’t escape it, we may as well decorate with it! Candy & dessert buffets have come into their own and party hosts and planners alike have tons of fun getting creative with dessert buffets. Sweets are an all around crowd pleaser and everyone smiles when brightly colored treats are freely available to take home!

Create your buffet as a focal point. Place a candy buffet in one special area or parse it out over the entire room and send guests on a sweet scavenger hunt.  Supply bags/boxes, ties & a dessert menu and have guests forage for their loot.

Here are a couple tried & true dessert buffet tips:

  • How Much Candy Should I Buy?: We get this question in every buffet build & its truly legitimate. Our best advice is to plan based on guest counts. We like this candy calculator from Candy Warehouse
  • Try to plan ahead & order in bulk: Instead of buying twenty bags, buy in cases and save money while gaining in variety. Local candy stores are great if they offer bulk for larger events. If time allows, order most of your sweets 4 weeks in advance to save on shipping costs.
  • Get crafty: Set up your table as part of your theme. Rent or purchase linens & get creative with signage, decor & containers. For a Halloween buffet, try spooky names such as “Dirt & Worms” for black rock candy crystals & gummy worms.  Check out your candy shop for candy skulls, bones, brains..you get it!
  • Go beyond candy: Creative folks are coming up with highly unique desert buffet themes & decor. Just check out blogs like www.hwtm.com for inspiration. For Halloween; add candy apples, fresh donuts, pumpkin shaped cookies & mini bottles of apple cider.
  • Rent the buffet: Not interested in buying all the containers, scoops & labels? Many rental companies, caterers & some party planners will rent you all the equipment and will style your buffet. Our company rents & styles entire buffets.

Candy alternative: Toys!

Gaining in popularity are toy buffets or toy bars. Same principle as a dessert buffet but swapping in fun toys. Halloween toys are great and can be pretty inexpensive. Stock up on seasonal stickers, pencils, notebooks and glo-sticks. Stack these items in fun containers and kids wont even miss the candy. Sites like www.orientaltradingcompany.com also offer great deals on favor bar toys.

Touch Down: Football themed buffets

Of course, the fall wouldn’t be the same to many without weekly football celebrations. Morph your savory and sweet treats into a fun food buffet and set out themed takeaway containers for guests. Don’t be shy- have guests pack everything from sliders to cookies & make it a real activity. Amp up your tablescape with team spirited labels, tickets & pom poms to create eye appeal. Offer markers tied to whistles for guests to customize their own to go containers. Serve football shaped mini pies, cupcakes & cookies for guests to pack up.

You really can offer fun & function choosing your party favors for any theme. A favor buffet or bar is a true crowd pleaser and one that guests will remember until your next big event!
