Tunin' with Tad

Fairfield County's live music scene in July

Javier Colon

July 12, Alive at Five, Columbus Park, Stamford

Don't judge a performer by their promotional poster. Matisyahu (extra points for correct pronunciation) grew up in White Plains, NY listening to reggae music. Like me, he dreamed of one day being able to perform the music he heard. Unlike me, he did it, and does it well. I will be seeing him perform live along with you on July 12th.

By the way, please look for me on stage at this year's "Alive at 5" concert series at Stamford's Columbus Park. I'm scheduled to be making announcements, introducing most of the shows, and plan to tweet photos and videos from back stage (if they'll let me.)

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes

July 13, Ridgefield Playhouse

If you love Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, or even Conan O'Brien's former house band "The Max Weinberg Seven," you will love Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes.  Southside is all Jersey Shore, in fact the band was co-founded by E Street Band alum Little Steven Van Zandt.  I actually saw these guys twice in the 80's.  I used to mow Jersey native Garry "Two R" Koop's lawn when I was a kid.  I only got paid if I promised to listen to the Bruce bootlegs he furnished while I pushed the mower.  The Boss really grew on me, so Garry took me to a few Southside shows.  I'm fairly sure Bruce Springsteen was commanding a hefty ticket price in those days, so Southside was a frugal way to introduce me to the live "Jersey" sound.  I remember being close enough to the stage to admire Johnny's Reebok sneakers, (which were at the height of popularity)  and little else.  It was so long ago, I can't even blame alcohol on my fuzzy memory.

Maybe this time I'll ask around, see if anyone needs any yard work done, and use the money to buy a ticket. The big question: Will Southside be wearing Tom's shoes?

Javier Colon

July 26, Alive at 5, Columbus Park, Stamford

The only thing that comes close to matching Javier Colon's incredible voice is his heart.  Javier was great about keeping in touch with his hometown radio station during season one of NBC's "The Voice."  In fact, he called us exhausted in the middle of the night following his victory on the show.  I've never met an artist more humbled by his successes, and appreciative of his loyal following.  Here's his appearance on my radio show before one of his area concerts:

Rufus Wainwright

July 27, SUNY Purchase, Purchase, NY

Rufus Wainwright, son of the late Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, is on the road in support of his new Mark Ronson produced album "Out of the Game." I saw him at the Newport Folk Festival a few years back. He has a sultry, yet powerful voice, and is well worth the price of admission.

There are a good number of music festivals, events and outdoor series' around Connecticut this month. You should definitely check out Charlotte Adinolfi & Nathan Tavares' article for some great tips.

I'm jealous of anyone who gets to go to the annual hackeysack tournament known as "The Gathering of the Vibes." Unfortunately, I'll be resting my Birkenstock laden "dogs" on a hammock somewhere on Martha's Vineyard that week. I'll be thinking of you and your glow stick freaking out to some song you think you "just heard the longest version ever" of. And hopefully I'll be able to catch a whiff of sweet patchouli oil in the ocean air. Can you tell I need a vacation?

Also check out the Chirp Music Festival in Ridgefield. I found myself liking the catchy little diddy that repeats on the Chirp's website again and again. I "Shazmed" that for you and found it to be the Wiyos playing on July 3rd. I put together an audio montage of some of the other acts playing at the festival. Listen to audio clip »
