Valentine's Day Twist

Rev up your Valentine's Day with great entertaining at home

Red foiled kisses, candy hearts & reactions ranging from joy to dread (be honest!). Valentines Day is a fantastic day to experiment with new entertaining ideas regardless of whether romance is in the cards. Large enough a holiday for your favorite restaurant to be packed, Valentines Day is also small enough where you aren’t obligated shuffle to your busy schedule or celebrate through the weekend. To get your inner cupid revved up, here are four Valentines Day entertaining themes that shouldn’t break your schedule and can be planned with as small or large a guest list as you desire.

Chocolate and Wine Pairing

What better way to channel your indulgent side than luxurious chocolates and wine! These pairings can be a match made in heaven and with lots of room for creativity. Like most food, the stronger (or bitter) the chocolate, the deeper bodied wine you will want. Consult your wine shop for pairing and private tasting ideas. One site that has tons of DIY pairing information is allchocolate.com. Plan the tasting either as a romantic couples event or invite guests over to more formally indulge and judge each pairing. Create a heavenly ambiance at home with deep red and gold hues and lots of candlelight. Consider hiring in a local pro such as a certified sommelier, chocolatier or personal chef for an indulgent touch.

The Progressive Dinner: Cozy and Warm or Pop Culture Inspired

While an over the top romantic evening midweek isn’t always ideal, consider using Valentines Day to get to know other couples or friends by hosting a progressive “getting to know you” dinner. Invite a few couples, neighbors or friends that you haven’t spent quality time with but have wanted to get together. Dinner doesn’t have to be formal but more of a light-hearted evening of new friends and conversation. Select a buffet menu of winter comfort foods and coordinating décor (candles, soft colors).

You could also take a comedic spin and set up different TV/Movie themed stations and drink pairings such as “The Love Boat” (Seafood with Champagnes), “When Harry Met Sally” (Upscale Diner/Comfort with Microbrews), “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” (Classic Foods with Cocktails).

Spa Night In

Great for singles and couples, consider throwing a spa themed evening that will leave guests recharged and embracing the romantic spirit. Whether throwing a girls-only affair or mixing it up, you could offer mini massages with a great aromatherapy bar. Everything from restorative yoga (by candlelight) to manis, pedis, facials and a private blow dry bar can be set up at home. Bring in healthy treats and spa inspired cocktails. And if romance with your honey is a priority, a private spa themed evening to spark up your winter will work just as well!

Cupid for Kids

There are so many ways to make Valentines Day fun for the kids. Excite them with an afternoon of cookie decorating, card crafting or preparing a fun family dinner together. Consider making Valentines treat bags to donate to a local charity and spread the love. Last year, we made these great Valentines Day candy favors and donated them to a great wedding based charity

An after-school get together with classmates and friends can be a super fun treat for everyone; even the parents. Set up a kid friendly table with craft paper linen, all kinds of crayons and art supplies and let the kids get creative. You can prepare cute mini flower arrangements using conversation heart candies as your “water”. Host a card making party, scour the internet for Valentines games, decorate cupcakes or simply serve up a heart inspired after school snack buffet for a special treat.

Of course, there are so many ways to make your Valentines Day special from the romantic to the much needed mid winter break. Consider it a special pick me up and a great reason to express your love for those special folks in your life.
