Sweet Tooth

One contributor's favorite sweet spots in Fairfield County

Dessert is a topic most dear to me. I can honestly say that, if all the desserts in the world were to disappear, I don’t think I would be able to survive a single day.

While I usually gravitate towards chocolate and chocolate based desserts, I am fond of many other sweet confections as well. Here is a list of my favorite desserts in this area and where I go to get my “fix”.

My Favorite Dessert Crepes are at Christophe’s Crepes Food Truck in Fairfield. Christophe Ensenat can be sighted on Post Road by the public library with his food truck most afternoons (if the weather permits). I love Christophe’s friendly personality. He delights in people enjoying his food. He has some of the most interesting flavor combinations for his sweet as well as savory crepes. Call Christophe at 646-596-6879 for details.

My Favorite New Dessert Discovery: At the Westport Farmer’s Market last summer, I came across John Bariccelli’s (owner, SONO Baking Company) Basque cake. What a delicious treat. It’s almost like a cross between a pound cake and a soufflé. With a rich and moist interior and a delicately crunchy exterior, it goes deliciously well with berry compote, ice cream, fresh fruit or just by itself. SONO Baking Company, 101 Water Street, Norwalk, CT

My Favorite Gelato is at a gelataria named Gelatissimo in New Canaan. As a family we frequent this little gem – especially on summer evenings. The gelato is so creamy and smooth here with just the right amount of sweetness level. A few years ago my family and I made a trip to Italy. We visited about 6-7 cities and made it a point to try the gelato in each city. As soon as we returned from the trip, with taste of authentic Italian gelato fresh in our mouths, we visited Gelatissimo. Gelatissimo was just as good! No Kidding. Gelatissimo, 26 Forest Street, New Canaan, CT

My Favorite Cutting Edge Desserts can be found at Elm in New Canaan. Pastry chef Caryn Stabinsky creates the most unusual of flavor pairings in her desserts. She forces you to think outside the box, when it comes to dessert – as she takes many classics and gives them a contemporary and sophisticated twist. Elm, 73 Elm Street New Canaan, CT

My Favorite Truffles can be had at Chocopologie in South Norwalk of course! Award winning, world-renowned truffles created by master chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt are always a sure bet. Chocopologie,12 South Main Street  Norwalk, CT

My Favorite Chocolatey Dessert is the Pots de Crème at Caseus Fromagerie & Bistro in New Haven. I know it’s not Fairfield County, but this restaurant and this dessert is truly worth the drive. And when you are there, say “Hi” to Jason (the restaurant owner, and host of a TV show on the cooking channel named “The Big Cheese”). Caseus Fromagerie & Bistro, 93 Whitney Avenue New Haven, CT

My Favorite French Toast is at Sugar and Olives in Norwalk. This is more like a dessert to me than a breakfast item. Jennifer, the owner and chef, makes this dish with angel food cake. Excellent choice! The result is the most decadent, light and soft bite…after bite after bite. Sugar and Olives, 21 Lois Street  Norwalk, CT

My Favorite Beignets are served at Martel in Fairfield. They are so airy, light and perfectly sweetened. One bite of these and I can take Café du Monde out of my mind. Martel, 2316 Post Road Fairfield, CT

My Favorite Selection of Desserts can be found at Isabelle et Vincent in Fairfield. With a tremendous selections, of cakes, pastries, pies, truffles and more…this is a fail-safe stop for all your dessert needs. Isabelle et Vincent, 1903 Post Road Fairfield, CT

My Favorite Dessert To Take To A Party is the Blood Orange Mousse at Balducci’s. When most parties tend to have chocolate based desserts, cookies, brownies or pies, this is a sure stand-out. Gorgeous to look at, this very delicate, super creamy and light mousse has just the right amount of tang from the blood orange. I love taking this for my hostess at any party – especially because Balducci’s packages it so well…they make the package it look like a wrapped up gift! Balducci's, 1385 Post Road East Westport, CT
