This summer's hottest workout + where to try it in Fairfield County
After reading about a new workout involving drumsticks called POUND®, I was eager to try it out. When I did, I immediately became hooked. It’s like no workout I have ever experienced before. No wonder it’s the latest craze to hit the workout scene.
POUND® is described as “a full-body cardio jam session that combines light resistance with drumming.” Here your opportunity to unleash your inner rockstar while you get fit! This complete workout fuses cardio, Pilates, isometric movements, plyometrics and Isometric poses and can burn between 400 and 900 calories an hour. You will strengthen and sculpt many infrequently used muscles and drum your way to a leaner, slimmer physique. Pound has received rave reviews from exercise and fitness gurus across the board, with mentions in The New York Times, Self, Shape, Fitness, Health, InStyle, and Elle among many more.
Creators Kirsten Potenza and Cristina Peerenboom share their story which was born from struggle and a journey to self- realization. When the two met, they were living in extremes. Kirsten was a work-a-holic and a play-a-holic without a rule or restriction in her pocket. She enjoyed a sense of freedom and wildness but was lacking a sense of balance. Cristina describes herself as your quintessential obsessive-compulsive fitness freak. She admits to calculating every calorie, workout, and move. A behavior, she admits, stems from a less-than-healthy place. From this a friendship, a partnership, POUND® and the POUND® philosophy was born:
Through continual upper body motion using lightly weighted drumsticks, called Ripstix™ you’ll turn into a calorie-torching drummer, POUNDing off pounds as each song flies by. Rock, rap, dubstep, pop and old school music fuse to create the POUNDtrack series. These Ripstix were specifically designed to get you ripped. Hence the name: Ripstix! These specially designed drumsticks weigh in at a mere ¼ lb each which is twice the weight of a traditional drumstick and slightly shorter in length. Believe it or not, even at this light weight, calorie-burning potential increases significantly.
POUND® works by combining easy to follow cardio moves with strength training and drumming – a combination that works the entire body. Your instructor will guide you through clear and thoughtful explanations - helping you to focus on the core group of muscles you are working on at that particular moment. There are modifications for each workout from beginner to challenging based on everyone's particular fitness level and ability. No matter your ability you will feel your body working. If you feel you need to increase the intensity of your workout you simply need to POUND® harder! As with any fitness program, it is imperative that you listen to your body. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up or modify your movements.
Each two to four minute song is carefully calibrated with interval peaks and extended fat burning sequences, which provides you with the best workout in the shortest span of time. When class is over, and you’re done rocking out to the 45-minute POUNDtrack, you’ll have done 15,000 reps, performed over 30 extended interval peaks, and zipped through over 70 techniques without even realizing it!
