Go Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Westport

For the adventurer in you...

Life’s a beach this time of the year. Challenge yourself (and the family!) to some fun in the sun, surf-style at Downunder Kayaking. Owner Kim Beaumont knows what’s SUP—stand-up paddleboarding, that is. The New Zealander-turned Fairfield resident tested the waters in 2005, transforming a small Rowayton water sports business into an aquatic adventuring hot spot. “We were the first business to offer a World Paddle Association sanctioned, world qualifying paddleboard race in Connecticut—putting the sport on the map here,” Beaumont explains. Nine years later and a second location in Westport, Beaumont’s charming river retreats top summer to-do lists with its friendly, easy-going vibe.

First time out on the water? No worries—Downunder welcomes newbies, enthusiasts and pros alike. “I love showing people a good time, getting them to relax,” Beaumont says. “We offer private kayaking instruction and for paddleboarding, which seems to be the most popular now, we have beginner and intermediate lessons, as well as clinics for those wanting a review and skill improvement.”

Thrill-seekers will love exploring through local creeks, wildlife estuaries and islands on one of the numerous guided tours available. “My favorites are Farm Creek and the Fish Islands in Rowayton,” Beaumont admits, although the Full Moon Tour is their biggest seller. And if you’re really looking for a challenge, get your sweat on with PaddleFit and SUPYoga fitness classes, for $40 per class or five and 10-session package deals.

Rentals average from $30 per hour to $120 a day with discounts for students, veterans, senior citizens and first responders. “All of our paddlers receive instruction on the dock, weather and tide information and a review of other hazards, like the boat channel and other rowers,” Beaumont says, adding that everyone is also outfitted with a custom-fit lifejacket. “In our lessons and tours, the instructors/guides are First Aid and CPR certified. They carry waterproof phones and safety gear bags for anything away from the dock.”

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to Downunder for the ultimate, one-of-a-kind staycation. “We’re all about having fun, being innovative and helping people feel successful and empowered,” she says. “Let’s all make a little difference in other’s lives!”
