The Style Report: Office Elegance

Stylish looks from desk to dinner

Karla Colletto Lace Suit available at Tahiti Street

Whether you spend your day in front of a computer or in the boardroom, please take note that in today’s society, you can look confident and feel comfortable while still maintaining a chic and feminine look.

While shopping for one of my clients, I was approached by a woman who teaches high school. She asked me for some guidance in picking out appropriate and comfortable work clothes that might transition to evening attire for dining out, movies or a party.

First tip: lose the term "work clothes" and substitute with "career wear" instead!

Glancing down at the stash of clothes she had already picked, it only took a moment for me to weed out each and every item that screamed “School Marm." The clothes were dated and did her no justice. I looked at her sweet face and asked her in which fashion book does it say teacher equals frumpy?  I told her, "If I had to look at you in these clothes; you certainly would not capture my attention." She ended up leaving with four dresses that were fitted, stylish and comfortable. These new clothes will help her turn heads and maintain the respect of her students.

While shopping for your career wear, please think of the interesting and exciting options that will pass muster even in the most conservative of workplaces.

Second tip: Don't dress to fit a part but wear what fits you!

Remember, clothing doesn't have to be sedate. I love clothes in black, white, tan, taupe and grey but those aren't the only colors to wear. It's spring now so add color to your wardrobe with this Fendi yellow dress. Consider adding a short grey and white tweed ala Chanel jacket to tone down this tailored dress and turn this into "Wow-wear"! How perfect would this dress be to wear for an important meeting?

While doing your summation in court, the idea is to keep the jury engaged...don't put them to sleep with your outfit. A Basler dress and matching jacket is an example of a double knit outfit perfect for the courtroom and pretty enough for dinner on the town afterwards.

Dresses can pack a powerful punch and are less complicated to wear. Just make sure that they are not too flashy or tight and that it is in a beautiful fabric and fit.

You can always wear a "borrowed from the boys" pantsuit, which is super chic, slimming and elongating. When choosing a pantsuit opt for a slim leg or go the other way and choose a wide gaucho YSL leg.

Thinking skirt suits...check out this little number...tell me where this will not take you. It's classic with an edge while still charming and engaging. Not to mention many designers are showing patterned jackets with solid bottoms giving yesterday's suiting a whole new feel. Check out this great look from Saks!

Third tip: Start out stylish in the am so you scream chic, confident and ready for anything.

The reality is…if you nail your outfit during the day there really is nothing more to do or say!
