Health(ier) Cookies (Yes, They Exist!)

Four brands of cookies that use natural ingredients.

Have you ever read the ingredients on the back of the average cookie package? If you have, you know that the list is often long and sprinkled with words you can't even pronounce, let alone know what they are.

There's been quite a backlash against unhealthy foods and chemical ingredients over the past few years. These days, everyone is health conscious, and the sugary snacks of the past are being replaced with smarter options.

Cookie lovers — you don’t necessarily need to give up your baked goods indulgence. Instead, find a cookie that doesn’t pack the sugar or artificial ingredients.

Here are four healthier cookies we love:

The 4:00 Cookie

This brand boasts its low-glycemic ingredients. Whether you have to watch your sugar for health reasons, or do so “just because,” this is a better option for your bloodstream. Flavors include “Gluten-Free Chewy Chocolate Chip,” "Fig, Coconut, and Dark Chocolate,” “Wild Blueberry Almond,” and more!

A taste test revealed that these cookies are sweet without being too sweet, so one cookie is all you need to satisfy your craving! But unlike the sugar-laden cookies of your childhood, they won’t leave you craving more, more, more.

Stud Muffin

True to its name, Stud Muffin sells more than just cookies. Check out their site to see for yourself! However, we love their line of Signature Cookies, which are all natural, always handmade, and are low in calories. With flavors from “Ginger Grants” to “Sugar Kisses,” there’s something for every sweet tooth.

Nothin’ But

This brand is sold at local favorites such as Aux Delices. Their products are made with less ingredients than the average cookie, making them a more natural option. Their site puts it best, “A few real ingredients, tastefully combined.”

We have to agree!

Carla Hall

Carla Hall cookies are made in small batches, which ensures that a lot of the most important ingredient — love — makes its way into every bite.

Aside from love, these cookies are also made from fine ingredients that won’t harm your body. That means unbleached sugar and flour, couverture chocolate, fresh nuts, spices, and other high-end ingredients.

Locally, you will find these cookies in flavors such as Pecan Shortbread with Vanilla Salt or Goat Cheese with Dried Cranberries and Rosemary, at Fairway Market in Stamford.
