Sculpted arms, toned tushes and perfect posture are just some of the attributes you’ll see in those long and lean devotees of ballet-inspired barre workout classes. Barre classes, which typically draw their inspiration from the fitness training methods first developed by Hungarian dancer Lotte Berk, continue to be en vogue in Fairfield County as evidenced by the growing number of studios where you can take a taut stand for fitness.
Although each fitness enterprise tends to put their own spin on barre moves; these non-impact workouts typically call on intense isometric poses to strengthen and tone muscles. (Novices may find their leg and posterior muscles absolutely shaking from the challenge on the first try or two.) And for all those cardio enthusiasts out there, barre workouts are wonderful supplemental workout to all that heart-pumping pounding Spinning, Zumba and running you do. (No barbells required!)
Here are a few places to raise the barre on your fitness routine.
Owner Cindy Sites has developed a unique hour-long class that calls on the best of Pilates, yoga and classical ballet for her trademarked The Figure method workouts. With Go Figure studios in Greenwich, New Canaan, Darien, and Westport and even the acclaimed ABT ballet studios in New York; there’s a convenient place nearby to stand up for fitness.
Founded in Mississippi in 2001 by dancer, choreographer, fitness guru Carrie Rezabek; Pure Barre has grown into a national movement devoted to invigorating barre-based classes that incorporate small-isometric moves set to music. Among its specialized offerings is a bounce back barre routine for new moms. Pure Barre brought its moves to Greenwich’s Railroad Ave., last year.

Finally! Fairfield can claim its own dedicated barre studio. She3 Well Fitness boutique opened on downtown’s Donnelly Walk last year. Here the emphasis is on a hybrid of moves inspired by Lotte Berk, Pilates, yoga and the Alexander technique. Ropes and TRX training are also used to fire up the cardio.
