New Spaces in Greenwich

Welcoming two new houses of style

Life’s Luxe Necessities

Known as the General Store of Greenwich, this new luxury-goods boutique is the brainchild of three friends who share a love for beautiful things. Karen Callan, Lonnee Gayle Star and Louise Tynan, who all live in Greenwich, bring backgrounds in fashion and design (plus talents as diverse as flying and landscaping) to their recently opened store, reminiscent of an upscale European flea market. Browsing the General Store also feels like visiting the home of a well-heeled friend, as the owners like to welcome shoppers into the parlor-like setting for tea and cookies and wine after 4 p.m. Among the elegant home furnishings inside are gold 1940s Parisian fan chairs, a white-velvet-and-ostrich-feather swivel chair, an eglomise chest with cashmere-lined drawers and many other fine antiques and gently used home furnishings. For accessories, the selection ranges from python-trimmed pillows to vintage embroidered linens, as well as smaller items such as candles, napkin rings and oyster plates. On the fashion front, the ladies carry crocodile purses, ornamented leather wallets and belts (at wholesale prices) plus stunning imported silk and cashmere sweaters. Everywhere you look, there’s a taste of the good life.

Hair Hero

For hair that’s softer, shinier and more precisely cut, ladies seek out Hiro Kataoko, who recently moved his salon from Rye to Railroad Ave. Besides cuts and coloring, the London-trained stylist, who once worked with Vidal Sassoon, revives tired and damaged hair using a Japanese treatment that’s like a drink of water for dry locks. In his contemporary space, Hiro and his staff pamper clients with invigorating head and shoulders massages as well as imported Nigelle Hy products; the Japanese straightening treatments are popular too. Cuts are available for women, men and children; first-time clients receive 20 percent off their services.
