The Style Report: Cool Weather Trends

Staying warm and looking cool

As Jack Frost comes nipping at your nose, most of my readers are plagued by the same burning question. How do I walk out the door maintaining my chic appearance without looking like the Michelin Man? I guess that would be my segue to coats.

Am I the only gal who never bought into the puffy coat? To me it always looked like wrapping myself in my down comforter. Oh I know it will keep me warm and toasty but at the price of losing my style and individuality. As a Ski Girl, I have found the perfect alternative to the puffy. Mine is black, lightweight, slim fitting, belted and the grey mouton collar is what made me take out my charge card and say this is practical, warm and has that extra panache that makes me stand out from the crowd.

So if you must own that ”oh so warm puffy coat” that is fine. Just look for one that is lightweight with a slim fit with a bit of fab design to it.

As a skier, I will pass along a fantabulous trick to brave the cold, look great and be cozy. Introduce yourself to a brand named Hot Chillys which sells feather weight under-ski garments. I wear them all winter under all of my outfits as they do not put on one extra inch but line my body with delicious warmth so I do not have to sacrifice style in the least.

Back to outerwear: Saying “I have a black coat” does not make an outerwear collection. It is like saying that you have only one bra!

To brave the winter in style here is what you should aspire to:

This year’s black coat is a black and white large blanket-type check as the black and white color combo is this season’s major statement. Or as I call it The Mod Austin Power’s look. It is one of the strongest and chicest looks of the winter.

Invest in a camel cape as its dramatic style will let everyone know that you have arrived.

The shearling coat will keep you smiling through the snow with it's leather exterior and soft lining. These are your winter stay warm and look cool coats and come in so many different styles….yummy! Personally I have a collection of shearlings in jackets as well as coats in many neutral colors and each one has an entirely different look. Yes I am the proverbial chameleon when it comes to dressing, and I ask why can’t you be as well?

Sweater coats, a great look and once again so many choices and please do not leave the store without the faux fur vests that are the perfect topper!

I used to be of the mind set that winter was not for dresses as how would I keep these precious legs of mine warm? Well fear no more as there are matching opaque tights this year to go with all of the skirts and dresses out there. Still thinking not warm enough? Finish this look with the newest shearper lined boots… no ladies; not Uggs…now they are showing so many high fashion boots with the wonderful shearper lining that can also be worn as a fold over to show the softness of the lining.

So you can still look feminine in wearing your dresses while not compromising warmth!

Leather, leather….don ‘t leave home without it! As all articles of clothing are made in a much lighter weight; long gone are the heavy leather and suede pants that once were. Your pant collection should include a couple of suede and leather pants as they are a fantabulous look of chic, cool and elegance. A pair of black, taupe, brown or tan will let everyone know that you are a stylish and confidant woman. And no, you will not look like a biker chick!

Please listen closely… as I have found nirvana… as clothes make the man…. accessories make the outfit. Scarves. No not the ones your grandma lovingly knitted for you but softer than cashmere, you can wrap them around your graceful neck and feel stylish and delicious at the same time… I never leave home without one.

  • Coats: black and white, camel cape, shearling, sweater coats, fur vest and if you must… make it a puffy with panache.
  • Dresses, skirts with matching opaque’s and shearper lined stylish boots.
  • Leather pants… go for it!
  • Soft patterned and solid scarves, cashmere is a plus.

As we all know, winter can be cold, damp and drab, but let your clothing reflect the look of the season with color, style and all of the wonderful new designs on the market.
