The coolest thing about the newly launched, Sails, set in Rowayton’s former River Cat Restaurant, is that it didn’t throw out the baby with the bathwater. Rowayton residents, a loyal bunch, loved the River Cat and asked for Executive Chef Nathan Kramer and many of the longtime servers by name. Recognizing this fondness for the former crew, the new owners, who also own several hotspots in Manhattan, brought them back, keeping the restaurant at once familiar and unexpected.

The new team worked their magic to create a clean and modern nautical ambience, inspired by the town’s love of sailing. Decked out in hues of grey, white, and deep blue, the décor echoes the sailing motif throughout. Patrons will note boat sails, highlighted by maritime pendant lights, draped from the ceiling, and an array of nautical touches—from the teak woodwork and chrome railings to the photography of world-renowned artist Michael Kahn, whose images depict yachting and maritime life.

The result is an upscale yet casual neighborhood spot that provides outstanding fare and friendly service in a nautical atmosphere. Sails is intended as a destination for both the entire family and for date nights, and, starting in January, live music will once again rock the house on weekends.

The menu, too, has something for everyone. For the little ones, there’s gourmet macaroni and cheese or freshly prepared grilled burgers. For adults, menu highlights include braised short rib sliders, fresh truffle and mushroom pizza and house-made lobster ravioli and an array of fresh seafood offerings, like the cedar planked sockeye salmon.

In the winter, you’ll want to sidle up to the fire or grab a seat at the bar for a casual meal. In the summer, the place to be is the brick patio, where you can take in the action along Rowayton’s main drag. After the meal you can hang out for the live music, stroll the docks, or head down the street for an old-fashioned ice cream at Brendan’s 101.
