Rolls that Rock

Get your Sushi on!

szantobett/SXC.hu

Did you know that Japanese people live longer and healthier lives than Americans? If you've never tried sushi there's not time like the present. Whether you like it in a roll, straight up sashimi, or fried up tempura style these Japanese restaurants will have you in wasabi and soy sauce heaven. It's time to get out your chopsticks and add a little sushi to your diet.

I admit to being biased, I love this restaurant. And by love I mean love. Really, I dream about their food. The dim sum is divine and the fish is so fresh it melts in your mouth. The Fairfield location is very, very "cozy", but that adds to the fun. Their prices are extremely competitive (their Kid's Box is $9 for chicken teriyaki, chicken yakatori, chicken tempura, shrimp spring roll, soda and ice cream). Definitely order the "Tiger Roll" made with shrimp tempura, spicy salmon, cucumber, avocado wrapped in white seaweed, $12.95 (for 10 pieces).

Kazu

Voted Best Sushi restaurant by our Greenwich readers. You'll enjoy your food even more after you sip some sake at their curved red leather banquet in the bar area. In the dining room you can choose a table or sit at the sushi bar and watch the chefs at work (so fun!) The "Super Kazu" roll is a meal unto itself made with tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, crab, salmon, avocado, mint, asparagus, cucumber, tobiko  (flying fish roe), $10. Your kids will love the Kid's Bento boxes, with Chicken tempura, sautéed udon noodles, yakitori (grilled skewered chicken), shrimp dumplings, California roll, a drink & ice cream, $11. And you'll love the price.

Matsu Sushi

Voted Best of the Gold Coast in 2010, Matsu continues to impress us with it's fresh out of the water fish and ever evolving menu and weekly specials like this week's "Westport Now Roll" made with King crab, asparagus and crunch with shrimp, tuna and avocado on top, $14. Matsu's wall of windows and extremely high ceiling gives this restaurant an open, airy feel. The sushi bar is possibly the best seat in the house.

Matsuri

This Japanese-fusion (so named for it's lengthy menu filled with cuisine from around Asia) restaurant is mostly known for it's "damn good sushi." Don't get overwhelmed as you peruse the numerous sushi and sashimi offerings. Just be sure to order the "Spicy Tuna Roll", $6, and the sensational"Godzilla Roll" made with spicy tuna lightly fried, topped with a mix of spicy shrimp and crabstick, $13. If you like sushi for lunch their lunch menu has great deals— all entrees come with soup, salad, California roll, rice, and shumai dumplings, $12.

Tengda

This Asian Bistro was voted Best of the Gold Coast, so you know it's going to be good. While you can't go wrong with any of their dishes— their menu is inventive and exciting— you don't miss out on their "Angel Roll" made with blackened tuna, tobiko, asparagus, kaiware (sprouted daikon radish seeds), yellowtail, salmon, eel, salmon roe, avocado, scallion, crunchy tempura flakes and the chef's special sauce, $18.

Wild Rice

While not stricktly a Japanese restaurant— they are Pan Asian, with cuisine from China and Thailand, too,— their large portions are meant to be shared. Go for their "Maki Lunch" special: a choice of 2 rolls, Miso Soup and a Ginger Salad for $8.50 or "Sushi Lunch": 5 pieces of sushi and 1 roll for $9. For dinner a great bet is the "Sushi 4 Me": 8 pieces of sushi and 1 roll plus Miso Soup or a Ginger Salad, $17.
