Camp with a Cause
The Studio Fairfield's summer camp fosters creativity and caring
What began four years ago as a young artists' studio in a small loft in the Stratfield section of town has now blossomed into a booming art-for-all-ages experience. In their new location at Fairfield's Sportsplex, The Studio Fairfield has opened their doors to artists young and older with fantastic programs from Pre-School art classes to Adult Art Classes, in all mediums, with truly creative camp in the summertime.
As summer rapidly approaches camp registration becomes a priority. Trying to find the right camp for our kids can be a challenge—is it sporty, intellectual, creative? The Studio Fairfield has mixed all of those qualities into their camp sessions; and they've gone one step further by creating a truly unique camp experience—all of their campers will work on art projects that "give back to the community."
The Studio Fairfield's founders Christine Orlando and Priscilla Igram have created 5 fun, funky and diverse art-based camp sessions (9:30am-12pm & 1-3:30pm sessions).
July 8-12: Sweat & Create! go for a jog and then paint “en plein air” in the morning sessions or sign up for kickboxing and pottery in the afternoon. Who says art doesn't make you sweat?
July 15-19: Experimental Art! allows the campers to really channel their inner Pollock and make a mess while creating works of art!
July 22-26: Arts of Kindness! encourages campers to be kind and create art for the enjoyment of all.
July 29-Aug 2: Art in Nature! practices the Goldsworthy style of creating art in the great outdoors.
August 5-9: Pottery Basics! will get you fired up—literally. Learn the basics of molding clay, throwing pots on the wheel, glazing your pottery. . . and then, well, eat off of it.
While each week of camp has a different art focus, the common theme of spreading kindness will run throughout. Time will be set aside daily for the children to create art that will be shared with the community. One terrific project is Ben's Bells (bensbells.org). The campers will learn to spread kindness through designing, constructing, and painting these whimsical clay bells that will then be hung throughout the community, spreading joy to all.
While our children learn to express themselves through art they will also learn life-long lessons in kindness, community and caring. Not bad for summer camp!
