“Kawant Festival – India”, a photography exhibit by Barbara Paul of Westport, CT will be presented at the Fairfield University Bookstore in Fairfield from May 1 through May 31.
Photos feature dancers at this unique festival, who present an extraordinary appearance by covering their entire face and body with white circles and who wear tall feathered headdresses. Around their waists are large bells which ring in unison as the dancers gyrate to the beat of drums and the music of decorated flutes.
Also highlighted are rural village girls wearing colorful matching tie dye saris and enormous silver necklaces, holding hands as they arrive at the festival grounds. Ms. Paul travels to remote parts of the world where traditional village life, customs and dress are preserved. She has presented numerous exhibits in Fairfield County, Westchester and New York. Recent exhibits include “Tuareg and Berber Traditions of Southern Tunisia” at the Rye Library and “The Amazing Himba People of Namibia” at the New Haven Library.
