Movies to Watch in 2014

A month by month breakdown of movie releases this year

January

Skip it

Trust me on this one; I’m saving you. January is a notoriously bad month for movies and the great majority of the films released in the first month of the year are terrible. Not all, of course, but a very large percentage are. This January looks to be shaping up to be one filled with terrible horror films and cheesy comedies.

February

The Monuments Men

The Monuments Men was actually supposed to be released on December 18 of 2013, but it was pushed back until February 7. It is about the true story of a group of art aficionados during the end of World War II who were responsible for rescuing artworks seized by the Nazis.

Starring: George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett

March

Grace of Monaco

Grave of Monaco is another film that was originally meant to be released in 2013, but was pushed back until March 14 (which means the producers probably decided to give up on trying to win any Oscars). The movie is about a small part of Princess of Monaco and Hollywood actress Grace Kelly’s life, which takes place during a of dispute between Monaco and France.

Starring: Nicole Kidman

Muppets Most Wanted

Muppets Most Wanted will be a great movie for family fun, and there will even be a bevy of celebrity guests who will make cameo appearances. The film is about The Muppets going on an international tour and mayhem ensuing when they run into Kermit’s criminal doppelganger.

Starring: Kermit the Frog, Tina Fey

April

Heaven Is for Real

If you have read the book you will likely be excited to watch the film adaptation of Heaven Is for Real. This true story is about four-year old Colton who experienced going to heaven during an emergency room surgery. Colton was able to see his father praying in the hospital, met his miscarried sister whom nobody ever spoke, saw his great-grand father who died thirty years before Colton was born as well as several other phenomenal happenings.

Starring: Greg Kinnear, Kelly Reilly

May

Godzilla

A remake of Godzilla is scheduled for release on May 16 in both 2D and 3D. With a budget estimated at $160 million (more than each of the budgets of the first five Harry Potter films) the special effects combined with the 3-D aspect should merge for an exciting watch.

Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston

June

So far June is looking to be relatively heavy in sequels. June will see the release of 22 Jump Street, How to Train Your Dragon 2, The Purge 2, Think Like a Man Too and Transformers: Age of Extinction

July

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

This sequel to the 2011 film Rise of the Planet of the Apes is scheduled for release on July 18. The film takes place eight years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and will depict the threatened population of apes led by Caesar the ape. The apes come to blows with a group of humans who survived the deadly virus that was released a decade earlier, and both sides will eventually be brought to a verge of a war that will decide who will be the dominant species on Earth.

Starring: Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke

August

The Giver

The Giver, which is set for release on August 15, is a science fiction film that is based off of the novel of the same name written by Lois Lowry.

Starring: Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep

September

When the Game Stands Tall

Who doesn’t like a good old-fashioned sports drama? When the Game Stands Tall is about the record setting 151-game winning streak set by De La Salle High School from 1992-2003.

October
